WRFU GOES LIVE!

WRFU -- 104.5 FM -- will go live this Sunday, Nov. 13, at around 5 p.m. If you live in the Champaign-Urbana area, please tune in as we celebrate. There will be lots of short vignettes from many RFU DJs, so you'll be able to get a sense of which shows will interest you. But in general, we're a free-form station. There are no day parts to speak of, so you never know what you'll hear when you tune in. Hopefully, that won't include dead air. We're currently working to automate our downtime with news and talk programs of a wide variety. There is plenty of airtime available, so if you are interested in airing your agenda, WRFU is the place.

At this point, we're not sure how far our broadcast range will reach. Since we're a low-power FM station, we think it will be 3-4 miles in any direction from the post office building in downtown Urbana. Even if you live in central Champaign, there's a good chance that you'll probably have to break out your antenna. Please don't be frustrated if you don't receive perfect reception on your first try. And please don't be surprised if your first time tuning in presents an odd listening experience, i.e. what appears to be a training session. Due to the nature of the beast, we haven't had a chance to do much training of airshifters prior to flipping the switch. We will be doing some "live" training, especially during the first week. So, first impressions are important and all, but please don't allow your first impression to be your lasting impression.

As for our show, Younger Than Yesterday, Donovan and I will be co-hosting this Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 8-10 p.m. After that, we'll switch off, with each of us hosting a different week. If you'd like to be on my e-mail reminder list, hit me up and I'll make sure to send you a weekly reminder on the Wednesdays that I'm hosting.

We took our show name from the fourth album by The Byrds, released in 1967. We wanted a name for our show that captured our impressions of ourselves as aging, balding, can't-stay-out-as-late-or-swill-as-much- beer-as-last-year rock and roll fans -- so to speak. In both of our cases, we consider music to be an eternal fountain of youth, possibly the best anti-aging remedy ever invented. Hence the name Younger Than Yesterday made sense. (It's also a damn good record.)

While our shows will share a moniker, there will be some differences between the two. I can't speak with confidence for Donovan, but I do know that his show will likely be a bit heavier on the indie rock and singer-songwriter slant. He'll probably mine more frequently from the last two decades. As for my show, if you've ever heard me DJ at Mike & Molly's, then you have a good starting point for what my show will sound like. However, I intend to play more obscure, and possibly less "friendly" music. I'll spin a good amount of new releases, but I'll cull a bulk of my set list from the decades of the Sixties and Seventies. In both of our cases, we'll do a fair share of talking as well, providing context and background on the artists that we're spinning. And we'll post our playlists and other assorted goodies on this site.

If you don't live in the C-U area but still want to hear our show, there's no immediate plan to stream the station. However, I plan on making my shows accessible via either download (through this site) or CD. More to come on that...but right now, there's work to do. We'll be spending this weekend actually building the station's broadcast booth and erecting the tower. IT'S ABOUT TIME.

I want to send a special note of thanks out to the bands who played the WRFU benefit in October: the Tractor Kings, Shipwreck, and The Infinity Room. It was mighty kind of them to donate their time to our cause, and I'm glad to finally be able to pay them back in kind with an actual radio broadcast!

Our contact info is located on the sidebar to the right. Hit us up if you have any requests or questions or just want to send us mad props. In the meantime, TALK HARD!
